Rely

Your words…

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.  Proverbs 3:5-6

My words…

Praise
There is so much I don’t know. If I could somehow weigh everything there is to know (in other words, what You know) and compare it to the weight of everything I actually know, it would be like comparing the weight of the earth’s oceans (times infinity) to the weight of a starling’s feather. I am incredibly humbled by my lack of understanding and immeasurably awed by what You know. You completely understand, to the last detail, each event that has transpired on earth, from the beginning of time until now: why it happened, who did it, why he or she did it, and how that event affected (or will affect) future events. I can’t remember what I got for Christmas. So when the writer of Proverbs reminds me not to rely on my own thinking but trust in You for my knowledge and understanding, that makes sense to me. Who wouldn’t go to the clear, crystal fountain when dying of thirst?
Prayer for me
So, here’s the rub. Because there is so much stuff I don’t know, I go in search of answers in other places besides Your throne. I like listening to biblical scholars. There are so many of them – alive and dead!  And they all sound so smart when they describe who You are, and explain how the bible came to be and why Genesis chapter one is so different from Genesis chapter two. And then there are those who don’t believe that what happened in the book of Genesis really happened, anyway. And don’t even get me started about what they say about the Judges. (You know!) And on and on it goes. After a while, I shake my head and stumble back to Your throne. Maybe that’s the best part about listening to them in the first place.
Forgive me
So many times, I rely on my own understanding more often than trusting in You to lead me to the truth. Perhaps it’s because I do not trust You with all my heart – only part. Forgive me for this sin of pride.
More praise
You are the fountain of ageless wisdom and understanding. Thank you for allowing me to drink from it any time I please. Just one benefit of being the daughter of the One who knows all.
